Android apps (short for applications) are mobile software designed for running on the Android operating system, which is one of the most popular platforms used in cellphones, tablets and other mobile devices.Since Android was introduced, more than 290,000 Android apps have been developed and most of them are available for download from the Android Market—the online software store hosted by Google—but not all are free. To help you get the best of the free ones, we have selected some gems in each category and added them here in a convenient list with clear and brief descriptions of each application item.
Finding suitable apps for toddlers in the Android store can be a little tricky, which is odd given Google’s mission to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.
So here are five of the best free apps for kids, road tested on a demanding three year old and a Samsung Galaxy Tablet. Anything that didn’t pass the two-minute-attention-span test didn’t get included, nor did anything with overly intrusive ads.

Free iPhone applications and games are the cornerstone of the iPhone. The majority of applications that people will put on their iPhone are not ones they will pay for, which is mainly because people cannot afford to pay for everything that they will want on their iPhone. The iPhone itself uses the framework of the application to establish itself as a superior device. This means that almost all of the benefits that you get from the iPhone come from the diversity of applications that are available.
If you want to turn your iPhone into a multifaceted device, ranging from a PDA to a hand held videogame console, you will have to get a sizable number of applications onto it. For this you have to mostly resort to free iPhone applications, but many of these are either missing important components or weighed down by banner advertisements.

iPads sell faster than iPhones

Apple has sold 1m iPads since its launch on 3 April, passing that sales milestone faster than many analysts had expected.
Apple said today that the 9.7in touchscreen iPad – a new type of device that combines the mobility of a smartphone with the speed of a laptop – reached the million sales mark in 28 days. That was much faster than theiPhone, which took 74 days to sell its first 1m units in 2007.
The company, which has already delayed the international iPad launch by a month, said it continues to have difficulty meeting demand. “Demand continues to exceed supply and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers,” the chief executive, Steve Jobs, said in a statement.
Analyst Daniel Ernst of Hudson Square Research said early sales had clearly exceeded Wall Street’s expectations. He had previously estimated sales for the entire quarter ending in June at 1.25m.
Ernst said his research indicates that a large portion of buyers are so-called early adopters and people who were already Apple fans, so the breadth of long-term demand is still not clear.
He called the iPad a “game-changer. This is a product that could really redefine how we consume a lot of content”.
I pads and IT
Reuters reports that President Obama admitted today in a graduation speech at Hampton University that he does not how to use many of today’s most popular electronic devices. The president really freaked out his young audience by saying he doesn’t know how to use an iPod, an iPad, an Xbox or a Playstation.
How can this be? He uses a Blackberry, for Pete’s sake. These are simple devices that anyone can use.
The idea of information and technology being dismissed as “a distraction” is quite surprising coming from President Obama, who used social networks and Twitter to gain the presidency. It’s a real puzzler.
The president then went on to tell students that education could help them overcome information overload, or something like that. We didn’t get it at all.
What’s Better Than $1.8 Billion Revenue? Giving Away 5,400 iPads
What happens when a successful and large company like semiconductor maker KLA-Tencor decides to give away iPads to all its employees? Well, it means the IT department is in trouble. After posting revenue of $1.8 billion, the CEO of the company gave each employee an iPad as a reward for the hard work; and not only did he gave people iPads, he also made sure the CIO of KLA-Tencor and IT folks would help everyone with the setup process.
That leads to iTunes account creation, email setup, apps installation, secure VPN connections. For 5,400 iPads, that’s a bit of work.

Needless to say, the iPad is utterly dominating the still nascent tablet market… but the extent of its domination might surprise you: according to New York based ABI Research, Apple controls eighty-five percent of the tabletmarket.
It gets worse… for the competition, that is. The next most dominant tablet maker is Samsung, yet they control only 8% of the market. Finally, Archos — European maker of many puffed up PMPs posing as bargain-basement craplets — controls a distant two percent.
The rest of the competition controls market share too small to count. At the end of the day, Apple and three competitors control 95% of the tablet market between them.
That won’t last, though. There are a lot more frickin’ tablets on their way this year.
“Many new entrants are looking to differentiate themselves from the $600+ ASP of the iPad, so low-feature and low-cost designs will become common,” said ABI’s Jeff Orr. “We expect between 40 and 50 million media tablets to ship worldwide in 2011.”
Let’s hope at least one of these tablets is actually competitive with the iPad 2. We don’t want Apple to get complacent designing the iPad 3, do we?

Blackberry today announced it is offering free apps worth £63 to appease customers hit by its three-day global blackout.Research in Motion, the Canadian company behind the phones, attracted widespread anger after millions around the world were unable to access email, surf the web or use the BlackBerry Messenger service. Many vented their fury on Twitter and other social networking sites. The problems began last Monday and services were only fully restored by Thursday.
RIM said the selection of premium apps will be offered as ‘an expression of appreciation for their patience’ during the disruptions. The apps will be available on the BlackBerry App World from Wednesday October 19 until December 31.The move to repair the damage to its reputation comes as a survey last week revealed that one in five BlackBerry users were considering switching to another supplier following the problems.
